What Jobscan is
Jobscan's core is the resume scan. Paste in a posting, or press Scan on a LinkedIn, Indeed or Glassdoor listing with its extension, and it gives your resume a match rate: how much of the posting's vocabulary it contains, weighted towards hard skills, education and the job title. It suggests aiming for 75%. Around that sit a resume builder and optimiser, cover letters, a LinkedIn profile optimiser, a job tracker, a feed of jobs matched to your resume, and Auto Apply, where you review each application before it is sent.
What Job Puffin does that Jobscan doesn't
A keyword match measures whether a resume contains a posting's words, which is what an applicant tracking system screens on. It does not measure whether a job is right for you. A posting can share most of your keywords and still be the wrong level, the wrong terms, or in a city you will not move to. Job Puffin's score is built for that question: out of 100 on seven criteria, each with a sentence on why, and your musts checked separately so a job that breaks one is flagged with the posting's own words.
It also works on the search, not a single job. The Chrome extension sends every posting in a LinkedIn search in one click, and the inbox lists them best first. The jobs you pursue go into a pipeline with notes, and Job Puffin drafts a first message to the people named on the posting. It does not rewrite your CV.
What it costs
Job Puffin Plus is $15 a month, or $12 a month billed quarterly, for 300 assessments a month; Pro, with unlimited assessments, is $24. Jobscan is $49.95 a month, more than three times as much, or $89.95 a quarter.
Both have a free plan. Job Puffin's scores 50 jobs with every feature and no card; Jobscan's gives five resume scans a month.
When Jobscan still makes sense
- You are applying through large employers' applicant tracking systems.
- You want to know which keywords your resume is missing for a given job.
- You want help rewriting the resume itself.
Which to choose
Ask where your time goes. If it goes on resumes that are not getting replies, Jobscan is built for that, and the two fit together: rank the search in Job Puffin, then run your resume through Jobscan for the handful at the top. If it goes on reading postings, Job Puffin gives it back, for under a third of Jobscan's monthly price, and the first fifty jobs cost nothing.
Questions
- Is Job Puffin a Jobscan alternative?
- They answer different questions. Jobscan asks whether your resume will get through an applicant tracking system for a job you have chosen. Job Puffin asks which jobs in your LinkedIn search are worth choosing. Many people would use Jobscan on the jobs Job Puffin puts at the top.
- Is Job Puffin cheaper than Jobscan?
- Yes, at the time of writing. Jobscan is $49.95 a month or $89.95 a quarter; Job Puffin's paid plans start at $15 a month, or $12 a month by the quarter. Both have a free plan.
- Is a Jobscan match rate the same as a Job Puffin score?
- No. Jobscan's match rate measures how many of a posting's keywords your resume contains, led by hard skills, education and the job title. Job Puffin's score weighs the fit on seven criteria, such as the level, the terms and how competitive you would be, with a sentence on each, and keeps your dealbreakers apart from it.
