What Huntr is
Huntr is a job search organiser with an AI resume writer built in. Its Chrome extension clips a posting from LinkedIn or elsewhere onto a board, filling in the title, the skills and the description, and from there it can write a resume and cover letter tailored to that job, give your resume a match score against it, and fill in the application form.
The match score is per job: you save a posting, then see how your resume does against it. On the free plan it is a basic comparison; Pro weighs the posting's qualifications and responsibilities as well as its keywords.
What Job Puffin does that Huntr doesn't
Job Puffin starts from the search, not from a job you have already chosen. The Chrome extension sends every posting in a LinkedIn search in one click, and each is weighed against your CV and what you are after before you have read it. You get a score out of 100 on seven criteria, a sentence on each, and a word on whether to apply. The inbox puts them in order, so you read the top of the list rather than the whole of it.
It also keeps your musts apart from the score. On a remote-only search, an on-site job that is otherwise a good fit is not left in the middle of the list: it is flagged with the dealbreaker, quoting the posting, and sorted below the rest. A match score built from keywords cannot do that, since "on-site" is just another word.
The jobs you go after move into a pipeline with notes, and Job Puffin drafts a first message to the people named on the posting, ready for you to send. Nothing goes out in your name without you.
What it costs
Job Puffin Plus is $15 a month, or $12 a month billed quarterly, for 300 assessments a month. Huntr Pro is $40 a month, or $30 a month billed quarterly: more than twice as much either way. Even Job Puffin Pro, with unlimited assessments, is $24 a month.
Both have a free plan. Job Puffin's has every feature, with 50 assessments to try it on a real search and no card. Huntr's caps the jobs you can track and the resumes it tailors.
When Huntr still makes sense
- You want help writing: a tailored resume and a cover letter for each application.
- You apply through company sites and want the forms filled in for you.
- You save jobs from many boards, not only LinkedIn, and want them in one place.
Which to choose
If you already know which jobs you want and the work is in the applications, Huntr is built for that, and the two can be used together: Huntr to write, Job Puffin to pick. If the slow part of your search is working out which jobs are worth applying for, start with Job Puffin: it ranks your first fifty jobs free, with no card, so you can see on your own search whether the ratings hold up.
Questions
- Is Job Puffin a Huntr alternative?
- Yes, if the hard part of your search is choosing what to apply for. Both track your applications and score a job against your CV, but only Job Puffin ranks a whole LinkedIn search for you and checks your dealbreakers, for less than half the price. Huntr also writes: tailored resumes and cover letters.
- Is Job Puffin cheaper than Huntr?
- Yes, at the time of writing. Huntr Pro is $40 a month or $30 a month by the quarter; Job Puffin's paid plans start at $15 a month, or $12 a month by the quarter. Both have a free plan.
- Can I use both?
- Yes. Use Job Puffin to find the postings worth applying for, and Huntr to tailor a resume to each one and keep track of it.
